Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions:

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

You must be at least 16 to work on the construction site (under age 18 must be accompanied by a supervising adult).
You must be at least 14 to work in the ReStore. Too young to volunteer? Get ideas for various youth projects that reflect the Habitat mission.

Do I have to register with HFHSTW prior to going to the job site?

Yes, we ask that all volunteers register prior to construction. This helps our construction crew plan the day's work! Please register online or by calling 985-893-3172 ext. 222.

Do I have to have previous construction experience?

No, our skilled construction crew will work alongside you, guiding you through the day's tasks.

How do I submit my on-line registration form?

Use the Online Volunteer Sign Up to schedule your days. Please contact Katie Melucci with any questions at 985-893-3172, ext. 222.

Group volunteers with more than 5 participants: Use the Online Volunteer Calendar, select the "Schedule My Group" option and complete the online "Create a New Group" process to create a new group.

Who should I look for when I arrive on site?

Please check in with any member of our team when you arrive. Individuals on our site team should be wearing an orange Habitat construction t-shirt.

Is water provided on site?

Yes, we have jugs of water on site. We ask that you bring a bottle with cap to drink from.

Do I have to be there at 8:00 when they begin?

Yes, when we start in the morning your construction supervisor gives an important safety talk and goes over job assignments for the day.

On my first day, where should I arrive?

Please go directly to your assigned construction site. This site information should be sent to you the week before your arrival.

What should I wear?

Closed-toe tennis shoes or boots are required. Clothes you don't mind getting dirty are strongly encouraged. Light colored, cotton clothing and a hat are recommended for the summer, layered clothing is recommended for the winter. Long pants are required for safety. Please avoid wearing jewelry, because it can easily get damaged or lost. Purses, children under the age of 16, and pets are also not allowed on site.

What should I bring to site?

Please bring a reusable bottle with a top (water is provided on site) and bring your lunch or money to buy lunch (Habitat does not provide lunch). Suggested items to bring: work gloves, sunscreen, mosquito repellent. If you choose to bring your own tools, please make sure they are labeled.

Do I have to stay on site all day?

We prefer to have volunteers stay all day, but it's not required. If you are unable to stay all day, let your construction supervisor know as soon as you check in.

Yes, we would like groups to stay all day. If you have special circumstances please contact us prior to your scheduled day.
